Porcelain and bamboo vase by Manji Inoue

This 18.6 cm high, 13.5 cm diameter white glazed porcelain vase by Manji Inoue is distinguished by its perfectly balanced oblong shape and delicate bamboo engravings. The patterns are meticulously sculpted in relief, subtly capturing the light to create a refined play of shadows, while remaining faithful to the artisan's sober and refined aesthetic. The dazzling whiteness of the porcelain, with a very slight celadon touch depending on the viewing angle, obtained through controlled firing, highlights the finesse of the engraved details and underlines the timeless elegance of the work.

The engraving technique that Manji-san employs involves carving directly into the surface of the semi-hard clay. At this stage, the porcelain is still malleable enough to allow precise engraving, but strong enough to maintain the integrity of the form. Inoue uses specialized tools, such as chisels and gouges, to create iconic designs such as the bamboo on this vase. The depth and thickness of the engravings are carefully adjusted to give a subtle relief effect and a refined play of shadows after firing.

The clay used is a local kaolin of great purity, characteristic of Arita porcelain. This material is worked on the wheel to achieve optimum finesse and lightness. After engraving, the piece is delicately polished to eliminate roughness and highlight the contrast between the smooth and engraved surfaces. Firing in a high-temperature kiln (around 1300 °C) fixes the patterns in the very structure of the porcelain, revealing a dazzling whiteness and a very soft texture.

This vase is signed (engraving) by the artist at its base and is accompanied by its wooden protective box on which the artist's name and official seal are affixed and closed by a sanadahimo (braided cord), guaranteeing its authenticity, as well as its turmeric textile on which the artist's seal is affixed. A magnificent piece that will increase in value.
