White kohiki ceramic vase from Suigetsu-gama
This white ceramic vase (kohiki) is a creation of the Suigetsu-gama workshop, located in Tajimi, Gifu Prefecture, Japan. Founded in 1946 by ceramicist Toyozo Arakawa (1894-1985), recognized as a Living National Treasure and a major figure in Japanese ceramics, the workshop is today led by Shigeki Mizuno, the fourth master potter in this lineage. Suigetsu-gama is designated an intangible cultural property by the city of Tajimi, due to its commitment to preserving traditional methods of making Mino ceramics, a style dating back over 1,300 years, characterized by subtle glazes and refined forms.
This vase features a slender shape with a slightly flared base, tapering to a narrow neck, ideal for holding delicate floral arrangements. The surface is covered in a matte white glaze, achieved using the kohiki technique. This method involves applying a white slip (liquid clay mixture) to dark clay, then covering the whole with a transparent glaze before firing, giving the vase a soft texture and an elegant rustic appearance. Subtle variations in tone and texture add character to the piece, demonstrating the workshop's craftsmanship.
The vase is signed at the base with the name Suigetsu-gama and is accompanied by its original wooden box (tomobako), on which the name of the workshop and the official seal are affixed, guaranteeing the authenticity of the piece. The box is closed with a braided cord (sanadahimo).
