Lacquer and gold natsume (tea caddy), karamatsu (larch needles) pattern by Niwa Shunshō

Sale price€470,00

This natsume (Japanese tea box) was handcrafted using traditional Japanese urushi lacquer techniques applied in several layers to a very light wooden container. It is a hira-natsume, whose shape is reminiscent of a go stone box. It is used mainly for koicha (thick tea) in some schools.

On a background of deep, glossy black urushi lacquer, an elegant decoration of stylized larch needles (karamatsu, symbol of endurance, resilience and eternity in Japan) was applied with gold powder, using the maki-e technique in slight relief (shishiai-maki-e). The interior of the natsume is covered with a very beautiful shiny black lacquer and a gold border.

This natsume was made by the artisan Niwa Shunshō.

This is a unique copy dating from the Heisei era (1989-2019) . It comes with a custom-made double protective box, one in red lacquered wood and the other in paulownia wood (tomobako). on which is indicated the name of the craftsman with his official seal and of a protective fabric (tomonuno). The 2 boxes are closed with a braided cord (sanadahimo).
