Arita Porcelain Vase with Peonies by Yasuzumi Nakao
This white porcelain vase is the work of Japanese ceramicist Yasuzumi Nakao, born in 1950 in Arita (Saga Prefecture). After training for five years at the Saga Ceramic Research Center under the direction of Manji Inoue, a famous Living National Treasure, Nakao san joined the Nakasen kiln, a family workshop established since his grandfather's time, located in Arita.
This vase, a delicate white porcelain, is decorated with a sculpted motif of peonies (botan, symbol of beauty, wealth and nobility), made by engraving on the still raw paste. This technique highlights the floral motif while maintaining a smooth and homogeneous surface.
Its soft roundness and fine neck make it an extremely decorative piece in which a pretty branch can be slipped or simply admired as a quintessential sculpture of Japanese beauty.
Nakasen Kiln is renowned for its production of high-quality white porcelain. Founded in the time of Yasuzumi Nakao's grandfather, the workshop perpetuates traditional Arita techniques, emphasizing the purity of the material and the precision of the carved patterns.
This vase is signed (engraving) by the artist at its base and is accompanied by its protective paulownia wood box (tomobako) on which the artist's name and official seal are affixed and closed with a sanadahimo (braided cord), guaranteeing its authenticity. A document (shiori) with the profile of the ceramist is also included.
