White porcelain vase with grape motifs by Kondō Hiroshi

Sale price€1.300,00

This large and heavy faceted jar-vase (mentori tsubo) is a work by Kondō Hiroshi (1936-2012), a Kyoto ceramicist recognized for his work in the continuity of the legendary Kondō lineage, and more particularly in the legacy of his father, Kondō Yūzō (1902-1985), a Living National Treasure, whose mastery of Kyoto porcelain techniques he extended.

Made using the yūri-kō technique, this vase features underglaze red patterns, obtained by applying copper oxide before firing. The decoration represents bunches of grapes ( budō-e ), a traditional motif associated with abundance and prosperity in Japanese ceramics. The surface of the vase is punctuated by a faceting (mentori) that creates a subtle play of light and shadow, highlighting the variations in the glaze.

Kondō Hiroshi's works are held in prestigious museum collections, including the British Museum. This impressive piece, signed at its base, is accompanied by its original wooden box ( tomobako ), on which appear the artist's handwritten inscription and his official seal. It is also provided with a protective cloth ( tomonuno ), marked with the artist's seal, guaranteeing its authenticity and provenance.
