Set of three antique Japanese bamboo boxes

Sale price€320,00

This set includes three antique Japanese rectangular boxes of varying sizes, made entirely from woven bamboo. Each box has a different patina, depending on the type of bamboo used, its age, and the treatment applied to the strips (e.g., exposure to sunlight), creating a beautifully harmonious palette.

The particularly fine and regular herringbone weave reveals true manual expertise. These boxes, once intended for storing objects, will be perfect as decorative elements or as very elegant containers, presented individually or together. Superb objects whose few signs of the passage of time (consistent with their antiquity) in no way impact their beauty and precious character.

Manufacturing technique

Bamboo weaving – takezaiku – is a very ancient craft in Japan whose process begins with the cutting of the bamboo, mainly carried out in winter, when the sap is less active. The choice of variety (such as madake , very common) and the age of the bamboo – generally between three and five years – directly influences its color, density and flexibility. The bamboo is then dried for several weeks to several months, then split, scraped, refined and transformed into very thin strips of very calibrated sizes.

The weaving itself is entirely manual. It requires constant tension, a precise eye, and perfect consistency. To make a box of this type, it takes approximately three months between material preparation, drying, weaving, and assembly. This long time, spread over several successive phases, is central to the quality and beauty of these objects.
