Natsume (tea box) Japanese urushi lacquer and maki-e gold powder decoration, sakura (cherry blossom) and yanagi (willow) motif

Sale price€1.050,00

This natsume (Japanese tea box) was handcrafted using traditional urushi lacquer techniques applied in several layers to a very light wooden container. It is a Ō-natsume, a large natsume.

On a nashiji background (very fine gold particles sprinkled between layers of translucent lacquer, creating a shimmering effect), a very delicate decoration of cherry blossoms (sakura, symbol of ephemerality, beauty and renewal) and a weeping willow (shidare-yanagi, symbol of grace, resilience and mystery) was applied with gold powder, using the technique of relief maki-e (takamaki-e). Some sakura were made with silver powder (gin-makie). The interior of the natsume is covered with a very beautiful shiny black lacquer, cherry blossoms in gold powder maki-e and a gold border.

This natsume was made by the art craftsman Yoshida Kasyou (born in 1943 in Yamanaka Onsen, Kaga), master lacquerer trained from a young age in traditional techniques, specializing in maki-e. Rewarded with several distinctions, he continues to perpetuate and transmit his know-how.

This is a unique copy dating from the Heisei era (1989-2019) . It comes with its protective paulownia wood box (tomobako) on which is indicated the name of the craftsman with his official seal and the name of the work; of his protective fabric (tomonuno) with the official seal of the craftsman and a braided cord (sanadahimo).
