Natsume (tea caddy) Japanese urushi lacquer and maki-e gold powder decor, hana (flowers) motif

Sale price€1.050,00

Masterpiece of Murata Senzan, a master lacquerer from Kanazawa, this sumptuous natsume is hand-crafted using traditional techniques of high-gloss black urushi lacquer applied in several layers to a lightweight turned wooden container, which is then decorated with a fabulous array of flowers including chrysanthemums (kiku), paulownia (kiri), meadow clover (Hagi), silver grass (susuki) and bellflowers (asagao).

The gold powder decoration almost entirely covers the natsume, the artist having used several maki-e techniques to create this piece: flowers in takamaki-e (raised lacquer) and nashiji (sprinkled gold powder) in shading over the black lacquer on the outside and completely covering the inside (which is also signed by the craftsman in red lacquer).

This natsume was made by the craftsman Murata Senzan;

It is a unique example dating from the Heisei era (1989-2019). It comes with a paulownia wood protective box (tomobako) bearing the name of the craftsman and his official seal, and a braided sanadahimo cord.
