Natsume (tea box) Japanese urushi lacquer and maki-e gold powder decoration, kakitsubata (iris) motif

Sale price€680,00

This natsume (Japanese tea box) was handcrafted using traditional urushi lacquer techniques applied in several layers to a very light turned wooden container. A very beautiful iris decoration (kakitsubata. The iris is also called ayame in Japanese), a traditional Japanese motif symbolizing good news, was then made with gold powder using the maki-e relief technique (takamaki-e). The inside of the natsume is covered in gold.

This natsume was made by the art craftsman Hirano Gyokuhō . He engraved his signature on the base of the natsume.

This is a unique example dating from the Showa era (1926-1989) . It comes with its protective paulownia wood box (tomobako). on which is indicated (below) the name of the craftsman with his official seal, the name of the work, and his braided sanadahimo cord.
