Natsume (tea box) Japanese urushi lacquer and maki-e gold powder decoration, hana (flower) and kikkō (tortoise-shell) motif

Sale price€720,00

A rather large natsume (Japanese tea box) handcrafted using traditional urushi lacquer techniques applied in several layers to a very light turned wooden container. A very beautiful decoration of flowers in a tortoiseshell frame (kikkō), a traditional Japanese motif symbolizing longevity and good omen, was then created with gold powder using the maki-e technique. Gold powder was also sprinkled (nashiji technique), giving extra shine to this very beautiful piece. The inside of the natsume is covered in silver.

This natsume was created by the craftsman Yuzo Taniuchi, born in 1960 in Wajima, the most prestigious of Japanese lacquer regions.

This is a unique piece that dates from the Heisei era (1989-2019) . It comes with a double protective box: a washi paper box and a paulownia wood box (tomobako) on which is indicated (below) the name of the craftsman with his official seal, the name of the work, and his sanadahimo braided cord. A protective white silk textile, also signed by the craftsman, is included.
