Natsume (tea box) Japanese urushi lacquer and maki-e gold powder decoration, fuji (wisteria) motif

A lovely natsume (Japanese tea box) handcrafted using traditional urushi lacquer techniques in a beautiful shiny black applied in several layers to a very light turned wooden container on which a magnificent and delicate wisteria (fuji) decoration was then applied with gold powder using maki-e techniques.

This natsume was made by the art craftsman Nakabayashi Seizan, born in 1951 and based in Fukui Prefecture, a region famous for its lacquerware. Nakabayashi san is renowned for his maki-e (gold powder) decorations of flowers, plants, and birds.

This is a unique piece that dates from the Heisei era (1989-2019) . It comes with a double protective box: a washi paper box and a paulownia wood box (tomobako) on which is indicated the name of the craftsman with his official seal, the name of the work, and its braided sanadahimo cord.
