Japanese ceramic box with camellia motif by Seigō Maeda

Oval Japanese ceramic box by the artisan Seigō Maeda, which attracts the eye with its harmony and strength and its beautiful decoration of camellias (tsubaki, symbol of beauty, love and perfection). Beautiful dimensions (length 20.6cm) and heavy (1.7kg), both practical and extremely decorative.

This box is worked with the Japanese ceramic techniques akae and gosu: akae (赤絵) is a ceramic decoration technique using a red pigment based on iron oxide, applied after the first firing and annealed at low temperature to fix the color; gosu (呉須) is a cobalt oxide pigment, traditionally used to achieve a deep blue underglaze, but can vary in hue from blue to green as here depending on chemical composition, firing, and interaction with the glaze.

The craftsman Seigō Maeda, born in 1968 in Okazaki, Aichi Prefecture, is a renowned Japanese ceramicist trained at the Aichi University of the Arts and based in Okazaki (Aichi). Specializing in iron-painted and inlaid decorations, he draws his inspiration from nature and exhibits regularly in Japan as well as abroad, notably in the United States, where some of his works are in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

This box, created in the middle of the Heisei Era (1989-2019) is accompanied by its wooden protective box (kiribako) signed by the craftsman (seal, name of the craftsman in kanji and name of the work) tied with a sanadahimo cord, and of a small document (shiori) containing information about the craftsman. The base of the ceramic box is also signed by the craftsman.
